Not a Box launches on Apple TV+!
A new show to celebrate imagination has premiered on the streaming platform, and it took inspiration from Sir Ken Robinson.
This month saw the premiere of Apple TV+’s newest hit children’s show: Not a Box.
The show is breathtakingly animated by Passion Pictures, and at its core celebrates the heart of children’s imagination and creativity. For the past few years I have had the immense privilege of serving as the Imagination and Creativity Expert on the series through Apple TV+'s changemakers initiative.
Based on Antoinette Portis's beloved picture book, "Not a Box" follows bright-eyed bunny Riley who transforms a simple cardboard box into magical worlds filled with new friends and fantastic adventures.
The show is an ode to imagination, and was inspired in large part by the work and life of my dad, Sir Ken Robinson.
It has been an incredible experience watching the show come to life, and seeing the final result I can confidently say that he would have loved it - the idea that creativity isn't about expensive tools or elaborate resources, but about seeing possibilities where others see the ordinary.
Here’s the trailer:
Why this matters beyond entertainment
This project embodies everything Dad believed about education and human potential. The series doesn't just entertain; it actively invites young viewers to create, explore, and celebrate alongside Riley. It recognises that children are naturally creative beings who don't need to be taught imagination - they just need the space and freedom to play.
Not a Box doesn't tell children what to think, instead it opens up space for them to think differently. It honours the child's perspective instead of trying to standardise it.
A invitation to imagine
Not a Box is available to stream on Apple TV+ now and I hope that families will watch it together - like ours does! Not just for the entertainment value, but for the conversations it might spark.
What would you do with a box? What worlds would you create? What adventures could you embark upon?
In a world that often feels constrained by what's "realistic" or "practical," perhaps we all need a reminder that imagination isn't childish - it's essential.
Dad always said that if we create the worlds in which we live, then it's within our power to recreate them. "Not a Box" is an invitation for the next generation to do exactly that, one cardboard box at a time.
It has been a privilege to collaborate on this project, and I know that Dad would have been incredibly moved to know that he played a part in inspiring its creation.

If you would like to support the work of the Sir Ken Robinson Foundation in establishing, protecting, and sharing the Sir Ken Robinsson Archive, please consider upgrading to a paid subscription.
We’re a very small, family run foundation. Only a handful of people can afford to work for free in this world, and unfortunately we aren’t them! The Sir Ken Robinson Foundation is a passion project, not a money making machine, and we are dependent upon donations and subscriptions like this one to keep going.
Our current priority is the curation and protection of the Sir Ken Robinson Archive. We feel it would be both a tragedy and a huge disservice to put this incredible collection in storage and let it get dusty, so we’re committed to establishing it fully and, one day, being able to share it with the world in a way that is as open source as possible.
We can only do that with support from people like you. All of the subscriptions go directly to project overheads, like keeping the archive boxes kept in a safe environment.
We know it isn’t possible for everyone to pay a subscription cost, and we’re so glad you’re here in any capacity - it’s the people who make this movement so special and, in particular, who keep this mission and legacy alive. You can show your support for free by hitting the heart button below and sharing our posts with your own communities if they resonate with you.
